Nervous About Joining a Gym? Let the Best Gym in the Northwest Chicago Suburbs Change Your Mind

Picture this: Your best friend texts you and invites you to try a fitness class. They tell you that it’s “bring a friend” week at 1.40.10 Fitness in Glenview, and they want you to try the 6:30am Strength class.

Now, imagine that same friend invites you out for an evening of pizza and beer somewhere in the Northwest Chicago suburbs. Which invite are you more likely to immediately answer yes to?

Judging from people’s reactions, asking them to work out - or try a new fitness program -  is worse than asking them to help you move. And moving usually involves free pizza and beer.

There’s a glaring reason that the two invites are met with vastly different responses. Yes, asking someone to work out is work (albeit with a significant reward). But the biggest reason is that it’s intimidating.

You might be a social butterfly who could walk into any room and strike up a conversation. But are you comfortable walking into a room of strangers and trying new fitness movements that you’ve never done before? Or what about our introverted friends? The desire for improved health and wellness is overshadowed by the idea of trying a new fitness program with a bunch of strangers.

Trying a New Gym Can Be Scary. Let Us Change That.

Some form of “I’m intimidated” is among the most common phrases we hear all the time from guests at 10.40.10 Fitness.

And what’s worse, we know that so many people in the Northwest Chicago suburbs have the best intentions and truly want to make a change in their life. But they let the fear win and never even walk through our doors.

As a result, they miss the chance at improved energy, weight loss, better sleep, less stress and so many other health benefits. They also never get the chance to see that everyone here has experienced that first-day feeling, and that we’re here to guide new people through theirs.

Do you know the feeling? Are you unsure if you’re “fit enough” or “strong enough” to try this? Have you used the words intimidated, scared or nervous? Are you afraid of somehow “messing up?”

If any of those things sound like you, our goal today is to help you overcome the intimidation of trying a new fitness program, and feel comfortable walking through our doors at 10.40.10 Fitness. Because it will likely be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.

How to Overcome Intimidation at the Top-Rated Northwest Chicago Suburbs Gym

Before we get started, the first thing we want you to know is that you really can’t “mess this up.” Our goal is for you to move safely and effectively, and that’s what your coaches are here to help with. Plus, every workout at 10.40.10 Fitness has a modification for every fitness level.

10.40.10 Fitness coaches ensure that you're moving safely and efficiently.

So now that we’ve established that you can’t “do it wrong,” here are three recommendations for overcoming any intimidation you might feel when trying any new fitness program:

1. Try a Free Class and Pay Attention to the Culture.

Whether you’re in the Northwest Chicago suburbs or somewhere else in the world, one of the most important elements in searching for a new gym is the culture. Your goal should be to find a place where you feel comfortable and welcome.

At 10.40.10 Fitness, our community includes people of all shapes, colors, jean sizes and wine preferences. We like it that way. Our culture is judgement-free, meaning no one is concerned with how “in shape” the other people are. Sure, they'll hold you accountable and cheer you on every step of the way. But everyone here shows up day after day to be the fittest version of themselves, not to impress other people.

2. There’s No Such Thing as Too Many Questions.

Never be afraid to ask questions. Especially at the beginning of your fitness journey, you’re going to have a ton of them. You likely won’t even know what you don’t know. So remember, there’s no such thing as a stupid question. Ask them all.

I’ve never done this before… Can you help me?

What can I expect at 10.40.10 Fitness?

What should I wear?

Do you have an accountability partner program?

What about nutrition?

I don’t want to look like the Incredible Hulk or one of those super-skinny models that needs to eat a cheeseburger. So, what should I do?

3. Be Willing to Say, “I’ll Give it a Try.”

A funny thing happens when you’re willing to take a chance. Most of the time, you find out that the thing you were so intimidated by isn’t actually as scary as you’d imagined. And you’ll likely find out that you’re capable of so much more than you thought.

Intimidation is an interesting thing: You can let it control you or you can take control of it. You can let it stand in the way of a great opportunity, a healthier body, a happier lifestyle, etc. Or you can rise above it and blow your own mind.

Ready to Try a New Gym in the Northwest Chicago Suburbs? Don’t Let Fear Hold You Back

Intimidation is one of the biggest factors that can stand in the way of someone trying a new fitness program. It’s not uncommon for new people to feel nervous or even flat-out scared to walk through the doors of a new gym.

But on the other side of that intimidation is where you can find a full list of incredible health benefits. From weight loss to improved energy, better sleep to decreased stress, and even new friendships or renewed self-confidence.

So if you’re in the Northwest Chicago suburbs and you’ve been on the fence about trying a new fitness program, remember, “Trying something new is scary. But you know what’s scarier? Regret.”
