If you’ve been searching for how to find the right gym, you might be a bit overwhelmed by all the options in the Northwest Chicago suburbs area. Or maybe you’re tired of wasting time, energy or money on places that don’t help you reach your goals.
The truth is, the gym you choose will impact more than just your fitness. As our 10.40.10 Fitness members will attest, it can affect your habits, self-confidence and even how you show up in life. The right gym can show you that you are capable of doing things you once thought impossible.
In today’s blog, we’re going to show you how to recognize if a gym will help you succeed, and (equally as important) whether you’ve got the right mindset to reach your true potential.
The 3 Types of People Who Join Gyms (And Why Only One Group Succeeds)
There are three types of people who join gyms. The first group - the real MVPs - are the ones who do what they say they’re going to do. Absolute unicorns, these fine folks.
The second group is the opposite. The people in this group will set a goal, give it a mediocre shot, give up and then settle for the way it’s always been. Over the years, we’ve had some “group two” people come through the doors, but here’s the spoiler alert: They’ve all quit.
Have you ever heard the saying, “How we do one thing is how we do everything”?
The telltale sign with group two is that they generally take the easy way out in most situations. This doesn’t only apply to the gym.
Let’s just call it like it is. The couch is more comfortable. If you’ve tried a ton of fitness options and think the “magic pill” is here at 10.40.10 Fitness, it’s not. (Hint: It’s not at the next place either).
Here, you have to do the work. With that career goal you have? You have to do the work. Parenting, earning a degree, writing a book… Whatever the big goal is, you have to do the work.
Why Some People Never Reach Their Fitness Goals
Before we go further, let’s not forget about the third group of goal-setters: The talkers.
These are the people that have big goals that they are truly capable of achieving, and often exceeding. But the problem is that they’ve become so proficient at talking about their plan to accomplish them that they never actually get around to taking action.
The talkers use a ton of key phrases such as, “I’m going to…” and “Starting next week, I’ll…”
First, we're not talking about the people who are waiting for all of their proverbial ducks to get in a row. Sometimes, group one people might say this, but once they realize the ducks will never actually line up perfectly, they’ll start anyway.
No, group three peeps will overemphasize the reasons their goals are important. Then they’ll tell you exactly how they plan to accomplish the goals. They’ll create lists and schedules and journals and whatever else they can drum up, in an effort to (consciously or subconsciously) delay actually starting the work.
Then, when nothing has been accomplished during the time they said they’d start, the talk resumes. You can expect a full list of reasons as to why it wasn’t the right time to start that particular goal, or maybe why the goal wasn’t the best for them in the first place.
After all, coming up with a revised goal and starting the planning process all over again is inevitably easier than actually starting to work toward the goal, right?
The Truth About Gym Goals: It’s Not About Timing — It’s About Action
Group three friends, it’s time for some tough love. At some point, you have to admit that it’s not a time or scheduling issue. Your schedule will allow it.
It’s not an ability issue. You’re perfectly capable.
You didn’t set the wrong goal. The goal is great.
You didn’t pick the wrong timeline. The timeline is fine.
It’s not about revising the goal. The original was solid.
It’s you. You just have to start the damn thing. Take action. Go.

As it relates to setting a new fitness goal, there’s some good news. If you would sign up for an intro session here at 10.40.10 Fitness, you’d find out that our coaches and community wholeheartedly believe in you. We will guide you every step of the way and cheer for you as you reach your various milestones. From losing weight to increasing strength, getting better sleep, improving self-confidence and more, we believe that YOU CAN DO IT.
But if you were to simply talk about your goals, and then talk about why you didn’t start, and then talk about your revised plan… we would start to see which group you’re in. And that you’re not living up to your potential. Or that you have no idea yet what you’re truly capable of.
We'll be honest: It's hard to tell someone that the problem might be them. To say that when they get out of their own way and truly believe in themselves, incredible things will start happening. But we truly believe that you can do it, and sometimes that starts with tough love.
